When people begin a new job; they want to give their best. They are excited at the thought of meeting new people and learning new skills. They wish to work with their talents to make a difference in the business and need to feel valued.
But most times, the worker’s expectations aren’t met and in a short time, they become unhappy, feel unfulfilled could even start looking for other jobs. As a manager, you should support and protect your employees’ desires to do an excellent job. When an employee starts to work for your business, you must provide some training to them so that they are not stranded in their new job. You should support and encourage them especially in their first two or three months. Your employees have different attributes, skills, and knowledge which they bring to your workplace. They also have varying needs so you should make customized plans for each individual for learning and development. You should assist them to comprehend which career path to follow. You should consider providing your employees with distance learning courses in addition to sending them on training courses. You may also consider giving them short-term transfers to different departments, project work and so forth.
Many employees consider their managers as their mentors. They look to them for advice and guidance as they work. They need to learn from you how to get things done. As your employee learns the ropes of your organization, know when to mentor and train them. When mentoring the employee, allow them to make their goals within some constraints that are specified. They should decide on the ways to use to achieve these goals. They can be guided by you on the available alternatives as well as how they may handle the challenges which they face along the way. Your role as their mentor is to encourage and support them as they go along. You should give your employee time as you coach and mentor them. They also should get support and some feedback as they grow and learn in the business.
You need to take time from the day’s work at last once per year and talk to your employees on a formal basis. You should conduct performance appraisal interviews with them. These interviews usually cover three areas which are; measuring their progress against the goals of the previous year, new targets for the coming year and a review of their learning and development. You should give them some time to get ready so that you can get a genuine two-way dialogue.
